My Story

The funds raised through Tour de Cycle Sisters will support Cycle Sisters and the Bike Project’s work to break down barriers to cycling for more women. I'll be riding 100KM on 18th September.

Women, particularly from ethnic minority and Muslim backgrounds, are less likely to cycle than men. Many women don’t own a bike and worry that cycling is dangerous, they won’t be able to do it or what others will think.

For refugee women there are even more challenges and learning to ride a bike can be a lifeline during very difficult experiences of trying to build a life in a new country.

“I was very depressed and I thought I had no one to turn to and that I had nothing of my own. I was depending on someone for everything and asking for support again and again…Having a bike makes me feel mentally strong. It makes me happy. It gives me a sense of positivity and I start feeling better. ” Sadaf, Asylum Seeker from Pakistan

Cycle Sisters is an award-winning charity with cycling groups in 8 London boroughs offering and inclusive and supportive space for Muslim women to discover cycling. We’ve committed to our rides being free of charge to make our rides accessible to all Muslim women. But running our groups costs money and as a registered charity we rely on your vital donations.

25% of the funds raised through this challenge will be donated to The Bike Project’s Pedal Power project which offers refurbished second-hand bikes and cycle training for refugee women helping to address the particular challenges they experience including PTSD, anxiety, depression and social isolation.

Your donations will have a life-changing impact:

For Cycle Sisters:
- Every year we run over 300 rides, across 8 different boroughs, completely free of charge
- Over 1000 women have benefited from Cycle Sisters with over 80% reporting improved physical and mental health
- 90% of our participants say that Cycle Sisters has helped them make new friends and feel more connected to their local community
- We’ve trained over 80 women as Ride Leaders to run rides for women in their community and 10 women as Bikeability Cycle Instructors opening up a new career opportunity

For The Bike Project:
- More than 400 women have graduated from the Pedal Power project
- 7289 bikes refurbished and given to refugees
- 785 people have been trained as volunteers and supported to develop and share their skills
- 171 refugees have been matched with a Bike Buddy to cycle together
